Attending college in the U.S. – it’s exciting, it’s challenging and it gives you so much to think about. There are probably a few special things that you had to take with you – essentials that go wherever you go. But chances are, your health insurance could, not be one of them. Many U.S. doctors and hospitals will not recognize out-of-country coverage, and U.S. Immigration may even require you to have adequate U.S.-based health insurance.
Health Care in the U.S.
· U.S. health care is excellent – and also the most expensive in the world. Your health insurance from home probably won’t cover you when you are in the U.S. This could be financially detrimental for you, because anyone – anywhere – can have an accident or get sick and encounter very large medical costs. Or worse, be unable to get needed care in the most appropriate place.
· U.S. federal regulations require J-1 students and dependents to buy health insurance. (It is strongly recommended that F-1 students and dependents also buy health insurance.)
· In order to participate in a J-1 Exchange Visitor Program, students and dependent family members must continue this health care coverage throughout their stay in the U.S.
